Fertility Support

Hypnosis, psychotherapy and fertility

Once a couple/woman decides to try for a baby, all too soon as the months pass it can become all encompassing, all consuming, often obsessive. You can find it difficult to focus on other aspects of your life. If month after month it continues not to happen-both of you can experience feeling detached and isolated from the world, a profound sense of sadness, scared of ‘what this might mean’. It is all about time-time seems to be running out. The uncomfortable reality is that there is a window of opportunity-a limited optimum fertile period in our lives.

As a hypno-psychotherapist, how can you help?

The mind has enormous power over the body, which is constantly influenced by our emotions, thoughts and beliefs.  There are many factors responsible for infertility, and our emotions can affect the delicately balanced hormonal system, which in turn controls ovulation, sperm production and pregnancy.

There is a wealth of research showing that hormone levels, ovulation and other reproductive factors may well be affected by what is going on in your mind. By consulting a specialist hypno-psychotherapist you can increase/maximise the chances of conception and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

As that clock is ticking, as a client you may be consulting me as an alternative to medical fertility interventions-to increase your chances of conceiving naturally or using hypnosis alongside medical treatments such as drug therapy or IVF.

As these treatments are not contraindicated with hypno-psychotherapy, maximum chance in conceiving is in taking advantage of all. One (body) without the other (mind) can be ineffective.

To aid natural conception, hypnotherapy is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and increase feelings of calmness and relaxation. Hypnosis can also help to restore confidence in yourself and your body. Being in a state of hypnosis can be useful as a means to resolve any issues around managing stress or unconscious blocks that may be affecting your ability to conceive and become a parent.

How do you work with fertility clients?

The focus of my work tends to not just about hopefully getting pregnant, but also about helping my male AND female client to re-establish control over their lives. It may be dealing with the emotional toll of the experience of infertility.

The goals for therapy are adapted to you as an individual, but may include:

  • Pursuing fertility treatment without feeling as if your life and body have been taken over
  • Reduce stress so enhancing chance of conceiving either naturally or with ART
  • Assist you in recognising that you have a life outside of infertility
  • Regain a sense of control over your life
  • Develop communication channels with your partner so that you focus on making decisions that are best for both of you

The impact of male infertility

It is statistically as likely that infertility will be due to a male issue as a female issue. If infertility is due to a male issue-male ideology can be challenged. This can create an emotional state of crisis-a man can often feel isolated, depressed, angry, have feelings of inadequacy-even impotence can result. Up to 25% of couples experience problems with sex when the male partner’s infertility is identified. All too often the psychological impact of infertility in men can be belittled or ignored. As a hypno-psychotherapist I can help deal with the emotional impact of infertility, whether male or female in origin. Talking to a stranger with an objective viewpoint and no agenda can be immensely liberating.
