About easibirthing®

A brief history of the service

It is somewhat ironic that hypnosis for childbirth is becoming increasingly popular in the UK in the last 10 years, as it is one of the oldest uses of hypnosis.

Florence Nightingale wrote extensively about the mind-body connection in her 1859 nursing volumes.

As early as 300BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle, medical philosophers and leaders of the Grecian School of Medicine were using hypnosis with mums-to-be. Interestingly, neither wrote of pain in their notes on normal, uncomplicated birth. They believed that the needs and feelings of women in childbirth were to be accommodated.

Aristotle wrote of the mind-body connection and emphasized the importance of deep relaxation during childbirth.

In the event of complication, women were brought into a relaxed state so that the complication could be resolved and treated. Hypnobirthing-the Mongan Method was a model first developed by Marie Mongan in the USA, based on the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, and whose principles are also the foundation of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT).

The Hypnobirthing Mongan Method model was developed based on American birthing practices. easibirthing® shares the principles of natural birth but has been developed in collaboration with midwives to reflect UK and local (Salisbury) midwifery practices.

“The missing ingredient in easy comfortable births is fear.”

Development of the service

There is a positive attitude and high level of commitment towards empowering women and partners in childbirth amongst the local maternity services.

Due to the extensive support received from the local midwives, we are able to offer FREE workshops and courses at an affordable price. Through mandatory study in a 2007 programme, I was invited to train all Salisbury District community and hospital midwives to actively support women and their partners using hypnosis in labour and birth.

I have successfully employed the easibirthing® model in the births of my own children.

“Birth is an experience that demonstrates that life is not merely function and utility, but form and beauty.”

Saskia's birth quote
